“As far as European city planning and architecture are concerned, the Walls of Lucca are a pretty unique reality. Built during the Renaissance, today, they are a leading example of Italian fortification. Moreover, the walls were turned into a large public park which surrounds and delimits the historical centre, consisting of 96 hectares of green space, and is for pedestrian use only. The walkway is flanked by different varieties of trees, with its 4.2 km suitable for strolling, jogging, or riding bikes.
During this tour, designed as an itinerary above and under the walls, venture into the discovery of the bastion’s interiors, recently restored by the City of Lucca and the Foundazione Cassa di Risparmio of Lucca. The visit of the bastion’s interiors is like entering the ‘bowels’ of the walls of Lucca which, actually, were never used for defensive purposes. Discover the immense brick vaults of the galleries, built for the purpose of hiding the heavy bronze cannons, are spectacular and breathtaking. At the same time, learn about the evolution of military engineering in Italy from the 13th to the 17th centuries.”
