“Particularly known in the Middle Ages for its strategic position as a converging point of many roads, Altopascio is an historical crosspoint for pilgrims travelling along the Via Francigena. The town is famous for its tradition of “assistance” carried out under the auspices of the Order of the Knights of the Tau. This tradition is represented by its famous “Spedale”, a hostel founded in the 11th century to host pilgrims walking along the Via Francigena.
The visit starts from Badia Pozzeveri. Walk on a stretch of road corresponding to the ancient Via Francigena, an important medieval arterial road which connected northern Europe to Santiago de Compostela, homeland of San Jacopo, and Rome, the Eternal City. In Altopascio, refresh yourself with a typical “wayfarer’s lunch” in a local trattoria, and right after that, visit the city and the Manor of the Knights of the Tau, a medieval order of chivalry, with the tau as their emblem.”
